Assistant Coach John Hill Leaving Gopher Hockey Team

The University of Minnesota's head coach Don Lucia announced today that assistant John Hill will not be returning to the team next season.

Hill has been apart of the staff since 2005 and also coached from 1999-2001 before taking a job in his home town, Anchorage, Alaska.

The report doesn't say if he resigned or if he was fired.

There are rumors that the Gophers are targeting former Gopher coach Mike Gruentzel to replace Hill.

Minnesota Gophers Joining Big Ten Conference

Mariucci Arena, get ready. Get ready for the Wisconsin Badgers, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Penn State Nittany Lions, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Minnesota Gophers are joining in the brand new Big Ten Hockey Conference in 2013-2014. The Minnesota Gophers have played in the WCHA for a number of years against North Dakota, Duluth, Mankato, St. Cloud, Denver, Colorado College, and so on. It is definitely a change but one that should draw big crowds from these major schools. Look forward to Big Ten hockey at Mariucci Arena!

Mariucci Arena Classic, Don't Miss It!

On Friday, December 31st, 2010 and Saturday, January 1st, 2011, Mariucci Arena will host the Mariucci Arena Classic. The four teams involved are Minnesota, Union, Ferris State, and Bemidji State. The Minnesota Gophers will play Union on Friday and Ferris State on Saturday. The Mariucci Arena Classic is a great holiday tournament to kick off the New Year! The Minnesota Gophers will be looking to sweep the 2 games and get ready for their showdown against the North Dakota Fighting Sioux on January 14th and 15th!

Hockey Season Started, Have you Been to Mariucci Yet?

The Minnesota Gophers have kicked off their 2010-2011 season campaign. They started out the season with 6 home games and have compiled a 2-2 record thus far. They swept the University of Massachusetts and then were subsequently swept by Nebraska-Omaha. Next up is the St. Cloud State Huskies who will play at Mariucci on Friday, October 22 and Sunday, October 24. There are plenty of home games throughout the season for Minnesota Gopher fans as Wisconsin, Duluth, Denver, Michigan, Michigan State, Alaska-Anchorage, and Michigan Tech will make appearances. No place like home at Mariucci

When you go to a game at the Mariucci Arena, there is a rare moment of disappointment. The Mariucci Arena is home to one of the strongest hockey programs in the United States and constantly brings in mass of people upwards of 10k per game! Those numbers bring Mariucci to a ranking of top 5 for college hockey. NCAA hockey is best watched at a venue like this, especially when paired with the best fans around - Golden Gopher fans. The Mariucci Arena is currently ranked No. 8 in the top 10 college sports venues by Sports Illustrated. Very cool. Go GOPHERS!

Mariucci Arena Schedule is pretty quiet for a while

The Mariucci Arena Schedule looks pretty quiet now that the Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey Season is over. Mariucci Arena will be a ghost town for the most part until the Gophers Hockey pre-season practices start again mid-summer. Until then, the Mariucci Arena Schedule may have some open skate ice time, but for the most part will be total empty. Check back for updates as the Gopher Hockey 2010-2011 season approaches!

The shortest month of the year is not short on Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey in the least. The Minnesota Golden Gophers Mens Hockey team will skate on the road and home in Mariucci Arena during the month of February, including a Valentine's Weekend trip to Denver, Colorado.

Gopher Hockey in Mariucci Arena is going to be over this season before you know it, don't miss a chance to watch the University of Minnesota Hockey Team skate on their home ice at Mariucci Arena at least one more time this season!

No Gopher Hockey at Mariucci Arena in December

Mariucci Arena is going to be a sad place for the month of December. The Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey Team is only playing a few games this month and they are all on the road... I'm trying to think of this in a positive light, usually my holiday season revolves around hockey games and it seems like a live in the Mariucci Arena Seats. But perhaps with the extended trip away from home, the Gopher Hockey team will turn there playing around and start the New Year with a new found sense of winning. I for one, do not like to see other teams win in Mariucci Arena!!

Mariucci Arena Fans provide HUGE advantage for Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey Team

Every sport has a home field/court/ice advantage... it comes from familiarity, no travel stress and most importantly FAN SUPPORT. The University of Minnesota Golden Gopher Hockey Team will be skating at Mariucci Arena this weekend and can use all the support they can get! With football season just hitting its stride, I'm sure you are thinking that it is a little to earlier to be thinking about Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey or where you can purchase Gophers Hockey Tickets... but as we all know, if you wait for the season to start you will be looking at the outside of Mariuci Arena instead of sitting on the inside screaming with the other Gophers Fans.

This season you have several options of where you can find Mariucci Arena Tickets

After a spring and summer of Outdoor Golden Gophers Sports, I'm back as my favorite Gopher Sports Trifecta gets into full swing.

With the Minnesota Golden Gophers Hockey Schedule starting in just 12 days this will be your your one stop shop for scheduling information, parking tips, Mariucci Arena Tickets and general arena information. As an avid Minnesota Gophers sports fan I love searching the sites and finding out information about whats new at the Gopher Sports Centers so that you don't have to. Check here weekly for roster updates and scheduling changes as well. My goal is to be the only source you need to use for anything and everything about Mariucci Arena.

Mariucci Arena Seating

Two weeks ago I wrote about where to park your car at Mariucci Arena, how about I write where to park yourself at Mariucci Arena. Below is a picture of the Mariucci Arena seating chart courtest of gophersports.com. When you look at a layout of Mariucci Arena, you may be wondering which one of these sections is the right section to sit in and then what row do you want to sit in. The truth is, there is no bad seat at Mariucci Arena.

Once I sat in section 15, row 23, seat 1 and let me tell you the band does get loud, but it was so much fun! The students really get into the game and I laughed at all the smarty pants remarks that the young gopher men would shout out at the opposing teams players or refs. I have also sat in section 20, row 15, those were the best seats I had sat in for sure. Perfect entire ice view over the glass. I have also sat in section 24, row 3, I don't mind being behind the net and it was an awesome feeling being that close to the ice.

Moral of the story, I have sat in a lot of seats at Mariucci Arena, but I also know that some people prefer to be on the corner of the ice or behind the goalie’s net or some people prefer to be center ice. Whatever you choose to do for a seating, I can guarantee that you will not be disappointed with where you are. As I said before all the Mariucci Arena seating is GREAT!

Mariucci Arena Parking

I have never had a problem parking at Mariucci Arena, but I often get asked how parking is around the area. No worries, Gopher newbies, there is an abundance of parking located around Mariucci Arena in the form of parking ramps, surface lots, and street parking. Parking facilities include the Huron Boulevard Parking Complex, University Avenue Ramp, and 4th Street Ramp. Some of the parking choices may seem less now that the TCF bank Stadium is being built, but there is still plenty of places to park for those that drive from the burbs to see the Gopher hockey team at Mariucci Arena. Mariucci Arena History

Mariucci Arena is full of great Minnesota Hockey History. I could write an entire book report about the Mariucci arena, but I will just give you a little taste. First, Mariucci Arena is named for the legendary Hall of Famer, John Mariucci. Mariucci was a native of Eveleth, Minnesota and a stand-out University of Minnesota hockey player. For over 40 years, he helped Minnesota grow into a strong “State of Hockey.”


John Mariucci’s many accomplishments include helping his squad win the NCAA national championship in 1940, playing five NHL seasons with the Chicago Black Hawks, coaching the University of Minnesota Gopher hockey team and advocating the development of local homegrown Minnesota talent. He coached the US Olympic team to silver in 1956 and in 1967. John Mariucci returned to the NHL with the Minnesota North Stars as the assistant to general manager, a position he held until his death in 1987. Mariucci Arena is appropriately named in his honor and is one of the finest college hockey arenas in the nation.

Mariucci Arena Experience of Lifetime

Mariucci Arena is in the heart of the University of Minnesota’s Minneapolis campus. I remember having a few experiences there as a child. Mariucci arena was where I saw my first hockey contest live, before I saw the North Stars or the Wild. The Gophers play Alaska-Anchorage every year, and if they lose it’s considered a disappointment. The game I was at was against Alaska-Anchorage, and it was the same story. But the Gophers didn’t disappoint a packed Mariucci Arena, scoring something like five goals in the first period. It was crazy seeing so much action.

Being in the state of hockey, Mariucci Arena tickets are hard to come by in Minnesota. The Gophers men’s hockey team is not a mere alternative to the Minnesota Wild. The Gophers have their own fans, and those fans don’t miss a game at Mariucci Arena. If you have never been to Mariucci, you must go! Minnesota Golden Gophers men’s ice hockey is always best experienced in person!
