Assistant Coach John Hill Leaving Gopher Hockey Team

The University of Minnesota's head coach Don Lucia announced today that assistant John Hill will not be returning to the team next season.

Hill has been apart of the staff since 2005 and also coached from 1999-2001 before taking a job in his home town, Anchorage, Alaska.

The report doesn't say if he resigned or if he was fired.

There are rumors that the Gophers are targeting former Gopher coach Mike Gruentzel to replace Hill.

2011-2012 Schedule is Released and Tickets are now Available

Dalai Lama is a full fledge Gophers fan

This past Sunday the man, the myth, the legend, was gracious enough to give a 75 minute speech in front of a packed house inside Mariucci Arena . being as it was Mothers day his holiness stressed the importance of mothers.

"My mother (was) so kind to me when I was young — I was the youngest of the children — that she really spoiled me," he said with a laugh. With the influence of his mother, he felt "deep inside, I am much calmer," the Dalai Lama said.
And in the photo above you can see the Dalai Lama is a full fledge gophers fan!

Mariucci Arena Will Have a New Hockey Captain

Mariucci Arena will have a new hockey captain next season. The new hockey captain that has been annointed is senior winger Taylor Matson. Matson finished with 10 goals and 3 assists in 30 games last season. The Mound, Minnesota native is a 6th round pick of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2007 NHL Draft. In his freshman and sophomore seasons, Matson suffered a season ending injury. He has fought back and battled his way from injury. He replaces Jay Barribal, the captain from last season who was also his teammate at Holy Angels Academy in high school.

Minnesota Gophers Joining Big Ten Conference

Mariucci Arena, get ready. Get ready for the Wisconsin Badgers, Michigan Wolverines, Michigan State Spartans, Penn State Nittany Lions, and the Ohio State Buckeyes. The Minnesota Gophers are joining in the brand new Big Ten Hockey Conference in 2013-2014. The Minnesota Gophers have played in the WCHA for a number of years against North Dakota, Duluth, Mankato, St. Cloud, Denver, Colorado College, and so on. It is definitely a change but one that should draw big crowds from these major schools. Look forward to Big Ten hockey at Mariucci Arena!
